The short answer: Claude is a free AI assistant made by Anthropic. To use it, open claude.ai or the Claude app, sign up with your email or Google account, and type what you need in plain English or Kiswahili. Tell it who it should be, who you are, what you want and how you want it. Then ask it to improve the first answer.

Claude works in Kenya, on a phone or a laptop, and the free plan is enough to do real work. This guide takes you from sign-up to three finished tasks in about 30 minutes.

What is Claude AI?#

Claude is an AI assistant, like ChatGPT or Gemini. You write a request, and it writes back: an email, a summary, a plan, a list of ideas, an explanation of a document you upload.

People who use it for work often prefer Claude for writing and for long documents. Its answers tend to be clear and well organised, and it handles long files well. That is why we teach our classes on Claude.

How do I sign up for Claude in Kenya?#

Signing up takes about three minutes, and the free plan needs no card.

  1. On a laptop, open claude.ai in your browser. On a phone, install the Claude app from the Google Play Store or the App Store. Check that the publisher is Anthropic.
  2. Choose Continue with Google, or type your email address and open the sign-in link that Claude sends you.
  3. Claude may ask you to confirm a phone number by SMS. A Kenyan number works.
  4. Type your name and accept the terms. You are in.

Use the same account on your phone and your laptop. Your chats appear on both.

What do you get on the free plan?#

The free plan lets you chat with Claude, upload documents and images, and get help with writing, research, planning and analysis. For most people starting out, it is all they need.

The free plan has a usage limit. When you reach it, Claude tells you when you can continue, usually after a few hours. Two habits make the free allowance last much longer.

  • Start a new chat for each new job. Claude rereads the whole conversation every time you send a message. One very long chat about ten different things uses up your allowance fast.
  • Keep files short. Upload the three pages that matter, not the whole 80-page report, when the job allows it.

Paid plans give more usage and extra features. Do not pay until the free plan has proved useful to you.

How do I write a good prompt in Claude?#

A prompt is the instruction you give Claude. The quality of the answer depends almost entirely on the quality of the prompt. We teach a four-part method, which we call R.C.T.F.:

  • Role: who Claude should be. "You are my social media assistant."
  • Context: who you are and what the situation is. "I run a catering business in Nakuru. My customers are busy office workers."
  • Task: what you want. "Write five posts for next week."
  • Format: how you want it. "Short, warm, simple English with a little Kiswahili, for WhatsApp Status."

Compare these two prompts.

text
Write a social media post for my business.
text
You are my social media assistant. I run a catering business in Nakuru that
delivers office lunches. My customers are busy office workers aged 25 to 45.
Write five posts for next week, one per weekday. Each post: two short lines,
warm and simple English with a little Kiswahili, one clear call to action
("WhatsApp us to order"). No hashtags.

The first gets you something generic. The second gets you posts you can use. Then never accept the first draft. Reply with "make it shorter", "make Tuesday funnier" or "give me three more options".

Three tasks to try in Claude today#

These are the three tasks we do in the first hour of our two-hour beginner class. Change the details in brackets to your own business.

1. A week of social media posts#

text
You are my social media assistant. I run [your business, in one line].
My customers are [who they are]. Write a week of posts, Monday to Friday,
to attract new customers. For each day: a short caption in simple English,
one idea for the photo, and one call to action. Friendly, not salesy.

2. A reply that says no to a discount but keeps the customer#

text
A customer sent me this message: "[paste what they said, for example:
Your price is too high, can you reduce it?]". I sell [product or service].
Help me reply. I do not want to reduce the price. Explain the value
([two or three real reasons]) warmly and confidently, and invite them
to go ahead. Short enough for WhatsApp.

3. A one-page summary of a long document#

Attach the PDF or Word file with the paperclip button, then type:

text
Summarise the attached document in one page for a busy manager.
Start with the three things I must know. Then list any dates, amounts
and obligations. Finish with any risks or open questions.
Quote the page number for each fact.

Always check the summary against the document before you rely on it. Claude is usually right, but "usually" is not good enough for a contract or a figure.

Can I talk to Claude instead of typing?#

Yes. In the Claude app, tap the microphone and speak your request. You can also use the voice-typing button on your phone keyboard. Many people find it faster to explain a task out loud, especially the context part of the prompt.

What should I never paste into Claude?#

Treat any AI tool as an outside service. Under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019, you are responsible for the personal data of your customers and staff. Never paste:

  • ID numbers, KRA PINs, passport numbers or dates of birth
  • M-Pesa statements, bank account numbers or card details
  • customers' names together with their phone numbers or addresses
  • passwords, PINs or login codes
  • medical information about anyone
  • anything a contract says you must keep confidential.

Replace real details with labels such as "Customer A" or "[amount]". The answer is just as good. In Claude's settings, under Privacy, you can also choose whether your chats may be used to improve Anthropic's models.

Where do I go after the basics?#

Once Claude is set up and you have done the three tasks above, the next step is to make it remember your job, so that you do not explain your business from scratch every time. In Claude this is done with a Project: a workspace with your own instructions and files.

That is what we teach in our classes. Cloudwise Limited, an ICT company in Westlands, Nairobi, runs hands-on AI training on Claude for individuals and teams.

  • In the AI Kickstart (Ksh 500), a two-hour live class on Google Meet, you set up Claude with a trainer and finish three real tasks.
  • In AI Essentials (Ksh 5,500), one Saturday morning, you build your own AI assistant for the job that takes most of your week.

If you are weighing up the cost of training, read our guide on how much AI training costs in Kenya. If you want to know what each AI tool is best at, see our guide to AI tools in Kenya.

Frequently asked questions#

Is Claude free to use in Kenya?#

Yes. Claude has a free plan that works in Kenya on a phone or a laptop, with no card needed. The free plan has a usage limit that resets after a few hours. Paid plans give more usage, but most beginners can do real work for weeks on the free plan.

Can I use Claude on my phone?#

Yes. Install the Claude app from the Google Play Store or the App Store, and sign in with the same account you use on your laptop. Your chats appear on both. The app also lets you speak your request instead of typing it.

Does Claude understand Kiswahili?#

Claude reads and writes Kiswahili and can mix it with English for a Kenyan audience. Its Kiswahili is good for everyday business messages, but it can sound formal or miss local phrasing, and it struggles more with Sheng. Ask a fluent speaker to check anything important before you send it.

Is my information safe in Claude?#

Treat Claude like any outside service. Do not paste ID numbers, account numbers or customers' personal details. Replace them with labels such as "Customer A". In Settings, under Privacy, choose whether your chats may be used to improve the models. For company data, agree written rules with your team first.

Want to set up Claude with a trainer beside you? The AI Kickstart is two hours, live on Google Meet, every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, for Ksh 500. You finish three real tasks, and the Ksh 500 counts toward a bigger course. Book at cloudwise.co.ke/ai-training/kickstart.
